In 1948, a few men back in Whitefish from World War II decided to start a ski area.

The ski area would be called Big Mountain, and it would be a ski area not just for locals, but a destination for folks coming in on bus and rail. Now over 70 years later, Big Mountain has changed to Whitefish Mountain Resort, but it’s still “big” and it offers more than 4,000 acres of skiable terrain, from beginner slopes to expert chutes, cliffs and powder fields.

While the former Big Mountain was a publicly traded company, Whitefish Mountain Resort is a private company with majority ownership vested in financial guru Bill Foley. Under his direction the resort has added several new lifts, upgraded the Summit House atop the mountain, and spent millions on infrastructure. The investment has paid off for the community of Whitefish, in having a high-end resort with great snowfall.

While the resort continues to grow, it has kept its small-town feel, and that’s perhaps why locals and visitors still flock to the ski area every year. It’s a place where you can get away, but feel at home.

Vacation rentals and real estate ranges from the funky to the exquisite. You can find a high-end condominium with turnkey accommodations, a designer home, or a retro-ski chalet that could be your next renovation challenge. Whatever your choice and budget are, real estate on Whitefish Mountain Resort is an investment in your family — and in your fun. Summer or winter, the resort offers seclusion, adventure and a mountain lifestyle with great views of the Flathead Valley.
